〜What's HAKATA DOLL?〜
Since Hakata is quite close to Korean oeninsula and China, it got a tremendous impact from Eastern Asian culture from ancient times. We can see this influence in famous local handicrafts such as Hakata-Ori (Hakata Fabrics) and Hakata Dolls. We have had the custom to appreciate unglazed dolls for at least eight-hundred (800) years. Recent archaeological research reveals that the doll appreciation began in Chinese town or tempies & shrines in Hakata and Kamakura in the era of Kamakura In 1600 (Azuchi/Momoyama era). Kuroda Nagamasa, a influcntial lord, moved to the county of Chikuzen (Hakata and its surtounding areas) to rule there. At the time of his movement to Chikuzen. Many craftmen were requested to get together at Hakata to build the town. This led to the foundation of our tradinational handicrafts and arts. As for unglazed doll in late Edo era, excellent craftman such as Nakanoko Kichibei, Masaki Sousichi (the founder of Sou-Hichi Yaki) and Shirouzu Buhei and so froth did good work and the Hakata Doll industry enjoyed popularity. The dolls were sold in many places in Western Japan. In Meiji Era. The Hakata Dolls were exhibited at the international exhibitions in Paris and other countries and got the high reputation as excellent dolls. Later, the doll has been known as “Hakata Doll” and treated as one of the representative Japanese cultures. The Hakata Dolls are also exported to overseas countries now. Now there are about one hundred(100)Hakata Doll manufacturers who make traditional and creative Hakata dolls.

〜What's MANEKINEKO (Lucky cat)?〜It is said that cats as pet was introduced to Japan from China more than one thousand years ago. At the same time the Chinese classic literature containing proverbs such as “if you wash your cat’s face and listen, visitors will come” was also introduced to Japan. It seems the reason for Manekineko being so popular as a good luck symbol of “thousands of customers” and “success of business” stems from it. It is also said that Manekineko raising its right hand “invites money” and one raising its left hand “invites customers.”
